Writing in a silly billy punny funny wild wild west way delights me.
Homophones, the more the merrier to marry. Add alliteration with a splash of double entendre and chaos may ensue.
To suggest finding a publisher for such work is easy would certainly be untrue.
Humor itself proves difficult enough, but add bit of the shadow Bard we writers all channel unbeknownst, the work becomes more “what what?” than “hear hear, let us publish this wow waouh work here!”
The story - initially written in 2018 - took its sweet homophone time finding a home. The piece was intentionally odd. A “less is more” flash, written to provide just enough for the reader to draw inferences and make conclusions from their own unique lived life.
Yeah.
The rejections rate for the story told me pop the intellectual bubble and get busy revising, to include scrapping the original title, “Moo”.
I played with the words. Had fun with the former Moo. Laughed a lot. Always a good sign for me.
And the story broke through.
“Tell Tale” was published by Witcraft, December 28, 2023. I love the literary tag line of Witcraft: Because not everything has to be serious.
Before I link to the story, I want you to hear this …
… when you read this:
“You’re the best you’re the best you’re the best best cow, you’re the best you’re the best you’re the best best cow,” she sings. “You’re the best you’re the best you’re the best best cow, you’re the BEST, you’re the best best cow!”
You have made my absurd writing complete!
Thank you for reading and thank you, Witcraft for publishing “Tell Tale” here.
Girls just wanna have fun.
